Saving wells to reduce water scarcity

Way back 18 years ago, the people of Passi City were suffering from water scarcity despite having a water district. But in 1997, the city found another way to get enough water for its people. Due to the city’s good location, the government constructed deep wells that supplies water for almost all the barangays in the city.
In 2008, however, typhoon โ€œFrankโ€ hit Iloilo and brought massive flooding. Passi City was not spared. All of Passi Cityโ€™s 11 deep wells โ€“ the sources of water that the city government had been supplying its people โ€“ were damaged.

A private group helped the city to shift it’s water source to jalaur river. But because some barangays are way far from the main city, many passinhons still depends on well waters for cleaning, bathing and even drinking. Everything changed when an incident happens, a family was infected by some illness and they suspected that the well waters is responsible for it. After they tested it, the found some bacterias like E. coli present on the water.

Many wells were closed and it caused the same problem that happens 18 years ago. The negative impact of closing the wells is crystal clear. It is undeniable that we need them, but first it needed us. We have to start rehabilitate our water wells.
Now, I created this project that aim to create online programs that could help the city’s people get enough water. I also wanted to spread information and awareness that could help them get knowledge in their well’s condition. My project wanted to create blog that promote deep well rehabilitation by the means of voluntary do days. I also wanted to create infographics that gives some tips to maintain water especially well water’s cleanliness.

This also aims to reach the government so they can help us with our intentions.
I will start promoting right after I uploaded it on the website. With the help of all of us, we can even exceed to the current status of our water. I will be using free website service by WordPress.
Any questions regarding this project can be send by email to: edmarvillareal869@gmail.com

Project-based learning as a means of improving Passi National Highschool

As a student of Passi National highschool, we should find a way to help improve the quality of the school. And one problem that I think affects most students is the fact that learning is so boring. Learning facts and lessons we need in future is fun. However, if we only imagine things like this, learning can get so unenjoyable. We need a learning system that can change things like these and help the students develop their skills. For me, the best way to make it happen is for the school to engage in project-based learning.

Instead of short-term memorization strategies, project-based learning provides an opportunity for students to engage deeply with the target content, bringing about a focus on long-term retention. PBL also improves student attitudes toward education, thanks to its ability to keep students engaged.

ย ย ย ย  ย A growing body of research supports the use of PBL. Schools where PBL is practiced find a decline in absenteeism, an increase in cooperative learning skills, and improvement in student achievement. When technology is used to promote critical thinking and communication, these benefits are enhanced.

CHOOSE STEM

What is STEM strand?

Are you a fan of Sci-Fi movies? Do you want to make some super cool machines like the one that Tony Stark build, or invent a car without wheels? If you want to build this things on future, then you can start by learning things about it. Lucky for you because STEM strand can teach you everything about these things.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines โ€” science, technology, engineering and mathematics โ€” in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications.

The difference of the STEM curriculum with the other strands and tracks is the focus on advanced concepts and topics.

Under the track, you can become a pilot, an architect, an astrophysicist, a biologist, a chemist, an engineer, a dentist, a nutritionist, a nurse, a doctor, and a lot more. Those who are also interested in Marine Engineering should take this track.

What are the subjects below STEM ?

โ—Earth Science

STEM will offer you a subject on Earth Science that would discuss continental drift, index fossils, and renewable energy. This program would also help you identify areas that vulnerable to disasters, interpret hazard maps, and learn the proper use of hydrometereological tools.

โ—Pre-Calculus and Basic Calculus

Take out your calculators and get a piece of paper. This should be your starter pack for your Pre-Calculus and Basic Calculus classes. These are all essential once you take your bachelor course on Mathematics or Engineering.

โ—Physics

Physics classes will explain the various phenomenons that are happening around us. You can also try magic tricks of kinematics, momentum, impulse, and a lot more. Also take into account the various thermodynamic concepts, oscillations, gravity among others.

What is the status of STEM in the Philippines?

Educational institutions in the Philippines are gradually recognising the relevance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in supporting innovation and driving future economic growth. In a bid to increase the number of graduates who enrol in science and mathematics-related courses at the tertiary level, the K-12 programme now provides senior high school students with an option to pursue STEM-related fields through the academic track. To this end, significant activity is under way to boost student engagement in these subjects, and teacher quality.

CHALLENGES

Data from World Economic Forum shows that the quality of mathematics and science education in the Philippines ranks among the lowest regionally, resulting in relatively low numbers of STEM graduates. Of the 645,973 university graduates in 2016, 76,423, or 12%, obtained a degree in engineering, 6828 (1%) were science graduates and 2736 (0.4%) were mathematics graduates. Of those that do pursue a science and technology degree, they either stay in metropolitan areas โ€“ with the majority (34%) concentrated in Metro Manila and the surrounding regions of Calabarzon (25%) and Central Luzon (7%) โ€“ or move abroad to pursue opportunities.

What jobs can you take after SHS?

By the end of 2018, 2.4 million STEM jobs were projected to go unfilled. While we are still waiting on updated figures for 2020 and beyond, the statement is still powerful.   For your inspo, here are STEM fields you can take along with examples of amazing individuals and organizations who have used their studies to help the Philippines. Maybe someday, you too can save the world with a brilliant idea!

Here are some careers you can take after graduating:

โ— Engineering

There is a demand for engineers not only abroad but in the Philippines also. โ€ฆ Contrary to popular belief, engineers are not only needed in construction industries. Tan said that because of the Philippines’ growing economy, a lot of fields and industries are opening up to graduates of engineering. A person working in Engineering in Philippines typically earns around 37,600 PHP per month. Salaries range from 11,900 PHP (lowest average) to 79,600 PHP (highest average, actual maximum salary is higher). This is the average monthly salary including housing, transport, and other benefits. There is a demand for engineers not only abroad but in the Philippines also. โ€ฆ Contrary to popular belief, engineers are not only needed in construction industries.
